March Update by Carl Carlucci

Carl Carlucci relives the action from Fryerning in March

Spring has sprung and with temperatures rising steadily throughout the month the fish finally awoke from their winter slumber and got down to some serious feeding!

Unsurprisingly it was the Valley Lake that was first to produce the goods for our members. This water is jammed full of 20s and often wakes up before the Main Lake and it was certainly the case again this year as our anglers made multiple catches the like of which you’d only expect to see in the summer months.

James Hegarty took a brace of 20s on the first day of the month; and this was quickly followed by another multiple capture, with Mark Fuller taking 3 fish in a 24 hour session with a koi of 22lb and mirrors of 18lb and 27lb.

Gary Little featured in last month’s column and continued his good run with fish of 28lb and a cracking 32lb Mirror, both fish taken on short day sessions.

Reece Thomas had some incredible captures in 2014 and carried on where he left off last year by taking a chunky 27lb Common on a quick day trip before returning a few days later to take an incredible 8 twenties with fish to 28lb in a 36 hour session.

Great fishing, particularly this early in the year and testament to what a fabulous water the Valley Lake is!

Well done to Reece on a great piece of angling!

The Main Lake also came to life this month and in some style too!

Chris Hellyar hadn’t fished the lake for a year but soon got back into the groove and what a return as he landed the Lady of the Lake, the mighty Gurm at 52lb 6oz! Chris had arrived for a 24hr session and had set up in the Logs swim, but having heard an almighty crash popped into the Box swim to see a large fish show again just off the island.

A quick move, a cast and an hour later and Chris found himself with the biggest fish in the lake in the bottom of his net. I was fortunate enough to witness the capture and had the pleasure of netting the fish for a delighted Chris.

The old girl looked immaculate and we were able to get some fantastic pictures which made the front cover of everyone’s favourite magazine, Carp Talk!

The Gurm just keeps on growing and looks certain to be Fryerning’s first upper 50, exciting times down at the pond. Well done to Chris on his capture.

The talented Joe Atkinson was next to strike gold on the Main Lake taking the awesome XL Pecs at 37lb 8oz. Hot on Joe’s heels was Dave Whitting with a solid looking Common of 30lb 3oz and on the same day, the ever consistent Adrian Hunt took “4 Scale” at 39lb 4oz.

Well done to the lads on their captures.

Matt Hughes landed the stunning Nunn, which was last caught at 45lb, just 20 minutes after moving into the Lodge swim on his latest trip. Sadly for Matt though the fish slipped the net before he could weigh or photograph it!

Well done to Matt on his capture. Fishing can certainly be cruel at times, but there’s always a story to be told and I’ll be back next month with the latest tales from Fryerning!
