FEBRUARY CATCH REPORT by Carl Carlucci

Back to Previous
February saw some of the coldest weather of the winter sweep across the country and with all of the lakes freezing at some point during the month the fishing was difficult with opportunities few and far between.

The team had to take to the boat on several occasions to break the ice to keep the Main Lake fishable and despite the sterling efforts of a few of our members no fish were caught from the big pond this month.

The fishing wasn’t the only casualty of the arctic like conditions with our boat’s hull giving up the ghost after it’s ice breaking duties. It was a sad day as the old girl sank and although she has since been repaired we took the opportunity to purchase another boat. Our new launch is a mighty fine ex Environment Agency aluminium work boat which having had it’s rather unattractive green paint job sandblasted off is close to its maiden voyage. It will prove particularly useful in humping the huge amount of tackle our anglers seem to have around the lake!

Despite the unfavourable fishing conditions though a new star was born at Fryerning as our Car Park lake came of age and produced a rake of fish for our members.

This intimate lake is the perfect winter water in many ways, being relatively shallow with depths between 4 – 8 feet and absolutely crammed full of carp!

The lake has benefitted from the complexes fish management programme which sees fish of 20lb and under from both the Main and Valley lakes being put into its rich waters.

As a consequence we now have a lake where you can catch on pretty much any day of the year and the fish have got big too, with plenty of 20s and a sprinkling of 30s.

Even I can catch from this lake and was lucky enough to catch a cracking 23lb mirror through the ice as the snow fell and all in just fifteen minutes of casting out. Great Fun!

Gary Little was undoubtedly the man of the month though absolutely hammering the Car Park Lake throughout February. Gary is a very talented angler and despite normally only fishing for a few hours at a time has managed multiple captures on every trip!

Gary has caught numerous upper doubles during the month and an incredible 8 20s, some real winter stunners amongst them. Gary has certainly shown us all what can be achieved with effort. Well done to Gary on his successful winter campaign.

The fishing was tough on the Valley Lake as well this month, but a handful of members did manage to get amongst them all catching 20s on days when very few waters in the country would have even been fishable.

Stuart Kilden was one of the anglers to enjoy Valley Lake success and caught on two of his short day trips first landing fish of 23lb and then next trip down breaking his PB with a beautiful 28lb mirror. Well done to Stuart, good angling.

As I write this piece the fish have just started to move and show more on all the lakes. The excitement amongst our members is almost palpable as we all wait for the lakes largest inhabitants to make an appearance.

I’ll let you know what happens next month!
