The New Years Eve champagne continued to flow throughout the month of January at Fryerning as the members celebrated some truly remarkable winter captures.

The first angler to feature in our new year’s honours list is Barry Wingham who caught the complex’s first 30 of 2015.

Barry arrived for a 48hr session on the Valley Lake to find he had the water to himself and fishing from the Slab swim went on to land fish of 17lb 8oz, 19lb 12oz and 30lb 2oz, all of the fish falling to Cell boilies.

Well done to Barry on his cracking start to 2015!

Still on the Valley Lake and another excellent result this time for Danny Clarke with a real peach of a Mirror that weighed in at 29lb 40oz. The fish is a new PB for Danny and fell to Tutti Frutti boilies fished from the 30 Yard Bar swim.

Congratulations Danny on a well earned capture.

Long term member Adrian Hunt fished through some of the month’s most atrocious weather including 60mph winds and torrential rain to capture one of the lakes most prized residents, the Woodcarving at a weight of 43lb 3oz.

This incredible looking fish is a new PB for Felixstowe based angler Adrian who caught the fish on the second night of a 3 day trip. The fish came at 12.30am from a firm spot amongst silt at 70 yards.

Congratulations to Adrian, dogged determination and application will always win through in the end, Top Result!

With the lake having frozen twice and ice still floating around it wouldn’t have seemed the most obvious time to be thinking about algae blooms, but the Fryerning team are nothing if not proactive!

Apparently the key with preventing algae from taking hold is to start early and so the team have been busy forming huge barley straw sausages made using a xmas tree netting machine. Floats are used to support the sausages which are towed by boat to various points on the lakes and then staked in place.

When barley straw is put into water, it starts to decompose and during this process chemicals are released which inhibit the growth of algae.  Controlling the algae in this way is  just part of the work undertaken on site to ensure the water quality is optimized in order for our fish to thrive.           

Main Lake syndicate members are able to bring a guest by arrangement and it was as a guest that Rhys Miles arrived late one a Friday afternoon to fish the water for the very first time.

Conditions weren’t favourable, with temperatures plummeting to -5c and the light fading fast Rhys set about barrowing all of his gear around to one of the swims furthest from the car park at which point the handle of the barrow he was using snapped!

Now many may have given up at this point but Rhys battled on and  just 6 hours later his efforts paid off when after a dogged fight he slipped the under the ginormous Gurm!

The fish weighed in at 54lb a new PB for a delighted Rhys who in his own words was “Buzzing”.

Congratulations to Rhys, great stuff, this is exactly what Fryerning is all about, big fish and happy anglers!
